(I haven't had a desk with a monitor for. (I don't have a 4k 60hz screen, I don't even have a desk right now!) So I have a Uni multiport adapter (that is pretty nice, but that I may return to Amazon) primarily for the card reader and USB hub, and rarely gig ethernet, but I'm ignoring the HDMI. Despite the monitor I have to connect to it. Have been looking for one to use with the M1, and while realistically one that outputs 1080p at 60hz is fine there's that part of me that can't stand buying an accessory that limits the full potential of the device. Talking back in TB2 era, so nothing since USBC/TB3 really came into its own. So I don't have good current recommendations. Along with a mech keyboard, trackball, etc, etc, etc. Were I to have a real desk again (something something 2020) I would probably want to clamshell the Mac and use two external displays when sitting at the desk. But I'm chalking it up to the M1 being a significant 'lift' for Apple, and dual external monitors just couldn't be squeezed in. I was a bit disappointed over the inability of the M1 to do dual external monitors. (If you have a comfy arrangement spreading apps out on multiple monitors, you've figured out your workflow, disregard my opinion. And swiping between spaces works pretty darn well. I missed some pixels, ok lots of pixels, but it kept me more focused. It is fun, but do you really need it? Or is it finding a problem for your solution? (I don't know of any computer enthusiast, for lack of a better word, that hasn't at least dabbled in multiple monitors once in their lives.) One of the best decisions I made at work, years ago, was to move from 3 external monitors and a 11' MBA screen to just the MBA. Maybe photo editing benefits, but I'm guessing again. I'm assuming music workflows might take advantage of arranging windows across multiple. But it all depends on the workflow, and what you've already gotten comfortable with.Ĭoding on a vertical monitor and testing on a horizontal one. It is neat, fun, etc, but pairing things down can be a useful exercise. This is my completely subjective opinion, but multiple monitors are a bit of a fad unless you have a workflow that really asks for it, or one you've developed that really takes advantage of it. Not maxed out all the things, but good enough for finishing my work day and just wanting to play something for a bit. Though more and more, that's what the console(s) are for. My (collecting dust) gaming rig is single purpose. You can do some gaming on your Mac, the M1 is a beast, but if you want max res, max refresh, max quality, max max max, then you aren't using a laptop. PC desktop is still the undisputed gaming king. Programming, once the M1 supports a few more apps. Mac is a very clean environment for word documents (resumes, schoolwork, whatever) and spreadsheets, taxes, what have you.

Use the Mac for 'serious business,' and the PC for gaming.
